Cottrell, Keane, Dunn, Downton, & Treadwell – PERI: Practice-Ecology Research Intensive

The PERI is the biannual Creative Practice Research Symposium in the School of Architecture and Built Environment at the University of Newcastle.  PERI is an acronym for: Practice-Ecology Research Intensive. The reference to ‘ecology’ in the title aims to acknowledge the diversity of research approaches and disciplinary practices in the PhD cohort. Twice yearly events offer an intensive forum aimed at assisting candidates in progressing their research, and building an ecology of relations between all in the community.

The July 2020 version of the PERI went online for the first time, and was constructed with an alternative emphasis to the ‘stand-and-deliver’ presentations and review. Rather, PhD candidates produced 3 minute videos that serves as a visual research abstract, and provided a ‘compendium’ document that offered deeper access to the research. Then, in teams of three, candidates interviewed one another across the day, with these questions and prompts serving to open up conversation across the group.
